چکیده

In earlier work it was shown that each nonabelian finite simple group G has a conjugacy class C such that, whenever 1 = x ∈G, the probability is greater than 1/10 that G= 〈x, y〉 for a random y ∈ C. Much stronger asymptotic results were also proved. Here we show that, allowing equality, the bound 1/10 can be replaced by 13/42; and, excluding an explicitly listed set of simple groups, the bound 2/3 holds. We use these results to show that any nonabelian finite simple group G has a conjugacy class C such that, if x1, x2 are nontrivial elements of G, then there exists y ∈ C such that G = 〈x1, y〉 = 〈x2, y〉. Similarly, aside from one infinite family and a small, explicit finite set of simple groups, G has a conjugacy class C such that, if x1, x2, x3 are nontrivial elements of G, then there exists y ∈ C such that G = 〈x1, y〉 = 〈x2, y〉 = 〈x3, y〉. We also prove analogous but weaker results for almost simple groups. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Probabilistic and asymptotic aspects of finite simple groups

This is a survey of recent developments in the probabilistic and asymptotic theory of finite groups, with a particular emphasis on the finite simple groups. The first two sections are concerned with random generation, while the third section focusses on some applications of probabilistic methods in representation theory. The final section deals with some of the asymptotic aspects of the diamete...

Simple Groups, Permutation Groups, and Probability

In recent years probabilistic methods have proved useful in the solution of several problems concerning finite groups, mainly involving simple groups and permutation groups. In some cases the probabilistic nature of the problem is apparent from its very formulation (see [KL], [GKS], [LiSh1]); but in other cases the use of probability, or counting, is not entirely anticipated by the nature of th...

Derangements in Simple and Primitive Groups

We investigate the proportion of fixed point free permutations (derangements) in finite transitive permutation groups. This article is the first in a series where we prove a conjecture of Shalev that the proportion of such elements is bounded away from zero for a simple finite group. In fact, there are much stronger results. This article focuses on finite Chevalley groups of bounded rank. We al...

Classification of finite simple groups whose Sylow 3-subgroups are of order 9

In this paper, without using the classification of finite simple groups, we determine the structure of  finite simple groups whose Sylow 3-subgroups are of the order 9. More precisely, we classify finite simple groups whose Sylow 3-subgroups are elementary abelian of order 9.

GAP Computations Concerning Probabilistic Generation of Finite Simple Groups

This is a collection of examples showing how the GAP system [GAP12] can be used to compute information about the probabilistic generation of finite almost simple groups. It includes all examples that were needed for the computational results in [BGK08]. The purpose of this writeup is twofold. On the one hand, the computations are documented this way. On the other hand, the GAP code shown for th...
